The government has asked all ministries and departments to set a target of 20 per cent in domestic and foreign travel, overtime allowance, fare and office expenses, etc., in the current financial year. In the midst of the second wave of the epidemic, the government is trying to cut expenses. The Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance has issued an office memorandum in this regard on June 10.
“All Ministries/Departments are requested to take steps to cut all avoidable non-plan expenditure. Also, 20 percent reduction should be brought in such expenses, which can be controlled. For this, the level of expenditure for 2019-20 can be taken as a scale.
However, it does not include expenditure related to epidemic control. The memorandum states that ministries should target reductions in expenses such as overtime allowance, domestic and foreign travel, office expenses, rent, rates and taxes, royalty. Along with this, efforts should be made to reduce the expenses related to publication, other administrative expenses, supplies and materials, cost of ration, clothing, advertising and publicity expenses. This is the second year in a row that the government has attempted to harmonize expenditure.
